Last week, the House Judiciary Committee held its first hearing for the new “Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.” The Republican-led committee, which Democrats have loudly opposed, is a response to years of high-profile reports and whistleblower allegations showing deep partisanship, lack of accountability, and the targeting of Americans by the FBI and Justice Department.

What will it cover? The committee will use witnesses and subpoena power to explore issues such as Big Tech censorship, the prosecution of alleged Capitol rioters, the government’s role in the Capitol riot, the cover-up of the Hunter Biden scandal, the targeting of protesters at school board meetings and abortion clinics, anti-Trump investigations, and more.

Testimonies coming in: At the first hearing, a former 12-year FBI agent testified that she quit the bureau because it became “politically weaponized” at the expense of important criminal investigations—which another agent alleged last year—and that it lowered standards for hiring new agents. A former FBI analyst testified that the bureau’s Washington office tried to pressure Boston agents to investigate people who had merely taken a bus ride to the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Going forward: Establishment media outlets have already begun discrediting the committee by smearing it as a “whine festival” and a “Qanon convention” and displaying polls showing that most Americans don’t believe the committee’s claims of government bias. Many Americans aren’t aware of how the committee is important, and as it begins to uncover evidence of Washington’s corruption, the media want to keep it that way.
