What to know: While Hunter Biden was selling access to his father to overseas companies, Special Counsel Jack Smith was the head of the Department of Justice’s Public Integrity Section, a unit tasked with investigating government corruption. He ignored red flags regarding the Biden family.
Why it matters: The DOJ appointed Smith as special counsel to investigate former President Donald Trump, whom Smith has now charged on dozens of counts. While targeting its political rival, the Biden administration hoped to appear unbiased by handing the investigations to a third-party prosecutor. But Smith, whose wife donated to the Biden campaign, inexplicably spared the first family from scrutiny.
- Catch up: Joe Biden has been credibly accused of taking a bribe from a Ukrainian company — his son’s employer at the time — during his vice presidency. Hunter used the influence of his last name to earn millions in foreign cash, and his father may have also received money from people tied to the Chinese government. Still, what we now know may only scratch the surface.
Nothing happened: Smith had the reputation of a ruthless, swift punisher of corruption, and his DOJ unit indicted several politicians. Many sounded the alarm about Hunter Biden’s foreign ties from the beginning, but Smith never looked into them. Since then, government whistleblowers have repeatedly accused the DOJ and FBI of protecting the Bidens.
