The Washington Commander’s defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was fined $100,000 for going to Twitter to ask why the George Floyd riots of 2020 didn’t receive the same attention as January 6.

The tweet:

Would love to understand “the whole story“ about why the summer of riots, looting, burning, and the destruction of personal property is never discussed, but this is ??? #CommonSense

A stark double standard and a sign of deteriorating freedom of speech. In 2020, the head coach of the Commanders supported his players’ decision to kneel for the national anthem in support of Black Lives Matter—a political position. Just last week, countless football teams released official statements supporting gun regulation amidst recent events. Coordinator Del Rio was not given the same freedom to express his opinion and ultimately apologized.

He’s got a point. The Black Lives Matter riots lasted over seven months. Participants committed over two dozen murders. Hundreds of small businesses were destroyed with some estimates showing nearly two billion dollars in damages. The media and progressive politicians downplayed the riots, many even encouraging them. The riots affected Americans much more than the Jan 6 riot, which has seemingly received non-stop media coverage.

Big picture: Reiterating progressive talking points is unquestionably allowed and even encouraged. Dissent, as seen in the case of Del Rio, is swiftly punished.
