Former President Donald Trump and his allies have found themselves in a variety of legal trouble as Trump is likely to announce his 2024 presidential run.

Investigating Trump: The Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating Trump for allegedly mishandling classified documents. This follows the unprecedented raid on his Florida estate last month carried out by the same FBI unit previously involved in the corrupt “Russian collusion” investigation.

Investigating Trump’s allies: As part of its politicized investigation into the January 6 Capitol riot, the DOJ has subpoenaed 40 former Trump aides in one week and seized two former advisers’ phones.

Investigating Trump’s political fundraising organization: A federal grand jury investigating January 6 is now probing Trump’s fundraising PAC created after the 2020 election.

Investigating Trump’s business: New York Attorney General Letitia James, who campaigned on putting Trump behind bars, is probing his real estate business for potential financial fraud. James also teamed with Manhattan’s district attorney last week to indict former Trump adviser Steve Bannon. They allege fraudulent activity related to Bannon’s border wall fundraiser during Trump’s presidency.

The suspicious timing: Trump has reportedly discussed plans to run for reelection in 2024. Highly publicized investigations or scandals can destroy one’s campaign. The FBI refused to investigate Hunter Biden’s laptop precisely for this reason, determined to protect his father from the scandal and not “change the outcome” of the 2020 election.
