The Republican National Committee (RNC) claims Google’s Gmail has been suppressing fundraising and voter-activation emails during crucial fundraising periods in 2022. During the final four days of every month, a critical time for political fundraising, the number of emails sent to spam folders by the RNC shot up from 10% to 100%.

Google’s response. Google says that they don’t filter emails based on political affiliation. They claim to be taking steps to ensure political messages are not accidentally flagged as spam.

Why does this matter? Gmail is the nation’s top email client, meaning Republican funding cannot reach the vast majority of constituents that may be interested in donating.

What is being done? This past month, members of the Republican House and Senate have introduced legislation to hold Big Tech platforms accountable for biased algorithms that affect how users see emails from political campaigns.

It wouldn’t be the first partisan move by Google. A whopping 92% of online searches are done through Google globally. Instead of providing all information applicable, Google applications have been known to manipulate searches and censor information to push their agenda. The European Union even fined Google $2.7 billion for this in 2017.
